What a Formula 1 weekend actually looks like

A standard Grand Prix weekend has five sessions across three days. Practice 1 and Practice 2 run on Friday, Practice 3 and qualifying on Saturday, and the race on Sunday. Qualifying sets the starting grid across three knockout segments, and the race itself is the only session that awards championship points.

A handful of rounds each season use the sprint format instead: one practice session, then sprint qualifying, a short sprint race on Saturday, regular qualifying, and the Grand Prix on Sunday. Sprint weekends award points in both races. Every guide on this page labels which format its weekend uses.

Broadcasters usually start their build-up show 30 to 60 minutes before each session, so the times listed here are lights out or the green flag, not the start of coverage.

Watching F1: frequently asked questions

Is F1 on today?

The banner at the top of this page answers that live. Formula 1 runs roughly 24 race weekends a season, with track action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of a race weekend and nothing in between. If there is no session today, the page shows the next one and when it starts in your timezone.

What channel is F1 on today?

It depends on your country. In the United States every session is on Apple TV, which took over from ESPN for the 2026 season. In the United Kingdom it is Sky Sports F1, with free-to-air highlights on Channel 4. In Canada it is TSN and RDS, and in Australia it is Fox Sports and Kayo.

How can I watch F1 live for free?

In the US, practice sessions stream free in the Apple TV app and new subscribers get a free trial. In the UK, Channel 4 airs extended race highlights free and shows the British Grand Prix live in full. In Australia, Network 10 carries the Australian Grand Prix free-to-air. Formula 1 also posts official highlights to YouTube after every session.

What time does the F1 race start?

Grand Prix start times move with the calendar — European rounds usually start at 13:00 or 14:00 UTC, while races in Asia, the Americas and the Middle East are set for their own local prime time. Every race guide on this page lists lights out in UTC and converted to ten major cities.

Can I stream F1 without cable?

Yes, everywhere. The Apple TV app in the US needs no TV provider and runs in a browser. F1 TV Pro streams every session live in more than 180 countries. In the UK a NOW Sports Membership carries Sky Sports F1 with no contract, and in Canada TSN+ is sold as a standalone stream.

What is the difference between F1 TV Pro and F1 TV Premium?

F1 TV Pro streams every session live with onboard cameras and team radio. F1 TV Premium adds 4K and multi-view. F1 TV is not sold in the UK, and in the United States F1 TV Premium is bundled into an Apple TV subscription rather than sold separately.
